ChatGPT + Zapier Interfaces Integration

Experiment: An Auntie Edna Etsy Description Writer Bot with ChatGPT and Zapier Interfaces

July 2, 2023

For those who know me, I'm pretty obsessed with vintage lamps. I love hunting for them at vintage markets, restoring them, and then finding them new homes through my Etsy shop the Archaeologists.

Once I have a lamp ready, I usually need to take pretty pictures as well as write the description for the product listing. While I have four years of art school to back up my photo capture, I have none for the writing bits. Having an assistant to write Etsy description will sav eme so much time (and build up my uniqueness in a crowded marketplace!)

In thinking about experimenting with ChatGPT and Zapier Interfaces, I have to think about use cases that present a lot of existing data as well as a blank space to fill. Luckily, vintage product data are among the most plentiful out there due to the sheer volume of similar products and accessible historical facts. Etsy’s descriptions are also often so generic that there’s a big opportunity to insert some personalities.

The goal is to experiment using the power of ChatGPT generative text and Zapier automation with the wit of Auntie Edna the character to write great Etsy descriptions, therefore saving time and building my brand at the Archaeologists!

It’s important to note that this is merely an experimental bot and I have no affiliation with Pixar or Disney, or ChatGPT, or Zapier. I just do this for fun and it’s a compliment bringing all of these companies together...

Enter: An Auntie Edna - THE Etsy DescriptOR

Why Auntie Edna?

Confident, witty, and ingenious, Aunt Edna from Pixar/Disney’s movie The Incredibles is the perfect persona to this Etsy description experimental bot.

She also has pretty recognizable sayings that can be distinctive in a text format. For example: ‘Well, darlings…’

GETTING STARTED

Defining Content via:

Name: showing purpose upfront i.e. Etsy description writer

Greeting: in the tone of Auntie Edna

Directive: giving directions to the model/bot

Action: copy the written description and shorten the path to Etsy listings

Test 1 LEARNINGS

The response should not be based on the user’s brief description but a given product name -> Need to specify in Directive

The actual response is pretty good!

TEST 2 LEARNINGs

Experiment with Generative greeting and not Static greeting -> Specify in Greeting and clarify Options

How does the user know which to choose besides that it sounds good? By having Auntie Edna recommending it, of course! -> Add recommendation component in Directive

TEST 3

Bot is confused about the first person perspective. Bot should not only be using the tone of Auntie Edna. Bot should BE Auntie Edna -> Fix in Directive

Zapier limitation

Once Auntie Edna has recommended an option, I wanted to offer a way to copy only this option (out of the three options). Unfortunately, Zapier Interfaces Beta only offers the ability to copy the entire response and not a snippet within. This is a feature that would be cool to have in the future.

FUTURE ITERATIONs

  • Add links to competitors / similar products

  • Apply wrapper for a branded experience

I would love to know how you’ve used ChatGPT and Zapier to augment your workflow (or hobby!). Please comment below and DM me! Would love to connect.
